In 2017, the Society of Actuaries (SOA) conducted in-depth interviews with retirees age 85 and older and their adult children, and the 9th biannual post-retirement risk survey with topics of emphasis on long-term care and caregiving, housing, and financial wellness. The 85 and older interviews are particularly interesting because now the SOA has conducted research at multiple stages throughout retirement. The survey results show major gaps in long-term care planning, preferences about housing, and provide insights into retiree risk management strategies. Retirees age 85 and older are focused on shorter-term cash flow management, dealing with risks as they happen, and are quite flexible, however, this plan does not work when there are major long-term care needs and multiple unexpected events. This presentation will provide key findings of both studies.
